Tianmu is largely located in Shilin District of Taipei City, and partly in Beitou District. It is adjacent to Yangmingshan National Park on the north and east sides, borders Huang River and Shipai on the west, and is connected to Lanya on the west. The area that is outside of Chishanyan is close to Waishuang River and Shilin.
During the Japanese Occupation Period in the Qing Dynasty, Sanjiaopu was the local name. Tianmu was only the name of a small place within the borders. After the war, Sanjiaopu region was zoned as Sanyu Village, which is divided into 8 neighborhoods at present, jointly called Tianmu Subdistrict. However, Tianmu is also commonly used as the name of the adjacent Lanya and Chishanyan, and generally regarded as Tianmu region in a broad sense.
During the Japanese Occupation Period, there are springs near Tianmu Shrine, which are called Tianmu Hot Spring. The spring comes from Beitou Dahuangzui two kilometers away by pipeline, and is guided downhill for the development of real estate nearby. "Tianmu Hot Spring" was prosperous at that time. Horses were kept in Tianmu Shrine to carry passengers in the early years. Later, charcoal-burning vehicles were taken, and private buses ran from Tianmu Hotel to Shilin Ring (in front of the Shilin Sub-bureau at present) also for the convenience of local residents.
In 1945, it was renamed as "Tianmu Temple", and there were local fair activities. The statue worshiped was moved to Sanyu Temple (worshiping Fude God and Cereal Emperor before).
Saint Mother Palace and Qixian Ancestor Palace of Sanya Temple at present are moved in at that time. The religious office was modified as the dormitary of Taiwan Paper Industry Company. About the origin of "Tianmu Neighborhood", the present chief of Tianmu Neighborhood describes as follows: Near the present address of No. 22, Ln. 191, Sec. 7, Zhongshan N. Rd., many stores opened by Japanese during the Japanese Occupation Period are named by "Tianmu", such as "Tianmu Bus Station", "Tianmu Hot Spring", "Tianmu Shrine", and "Tianmu Hotel". They gather around Ln. 191, Sec. 7, Zhongshan N. Rd. The name of Tianmu was very famous at that time.
The agreement was made that three neighborhoods took turns to elect one candidate for every session, and the member can only serve for one term. Meanwhile, they declared that Sanyu, Chishan, and Lanya Neighborhoods were "Tianmu". After negotiation, Li-rong Liu from Lanya Neighborhood participated in and successfully won the fourth election of county member. It was the turn of Sanyu Village for the fifth election of county member. A-luo Chuang participated in and successfully won the election. Thereafter, Sanyu, Chishan, and Lanya Neighborhoods were called "Tianmu”.

Religious place: Located on Tianmu E. Rd., Taipei City, Tianmu Sanyu Temple is mainly a Taoist temple worshiping Cereal Emperor. The building was built in 1947, and it is an archaistic temple building located in Shilin Dist., Taipei City.
Construction of water resource: In about 1928, Japanese built Caoshan Waterway to deliver the water source on Yangmingshan to Guting via Tianmu. It is the single-waterway project with the largest cost and the most complete system in Taiwan in the age of Japan as well as one of the important infrastructures that making Taipei as a modern city.
Traditional merchants: At that time, US army did not usually interact with local residents, but merchants still gradually gathered nearby due to life demands. Tianmu Dry Cleaning Shop, Jerry Meat Store at Sec. 7, Zhongshan N. Rd. and Tianmu "Xinxin Electric Appliances Shop" were opened in 1953.
Tianmu Aqueduct Festival: 15 years ago, in Tianmu, Taipei, a group of mothers saw workers digging water pipes when picking their children from school. They asked curiously and started the story of mothers guarding water source thereafter. For 15 years, they held "Tianmu Aqueduct Festival" on March 22 around the World Water Day every year to remind people of the importance of protecting water source and integrate the care for water into local courses of middle and primary schools. Starting the protection of water source from education is the real infrastructure.
Tianmu Gold-rain Tree Festival: The Gold-rain Tree Festival was formerly Tianmu Shilin International Cultural Festival. Later, the district office introduced the concept of international cultural exchange, and outlined the future vision of Shilin as "Building International New Shilin". After 1998, it was gradually transformed to Shilin International Cultural Festival. Except for international requirements, the concept of overall creation of community was integrated. Relevant communities of Shilin were mobilized for active participation. Shilin International Cultural Festival went mature day by day, and the activities also went diversified.
Tianmu Halloween: For the carnival activity of Halloween, merchants hold street touring activities in Tianmu business district to activating the economic activities and create an exotic atmosphere for Tianmu Halloween holiday. Over 200,000 tourists are attracted every year, making Tianmu business district extremely crowed.
